Want to know what my top 5 business lessons learnt in 2018 are?
As I write this, there are only a few more days left in 2018! I feel like we all say it, every year, but this year has flown!
It’s my favourite time of year, and not just because it’s Christmas.
Even more than that, I love that there’s a fresh year just around the corner. One that hasn’t written yet. It’s wide open for you to create whatever you want.
I’ve caught myself spending so much time thinking about the new year. Wondering how it will play out. Thinking about what I could achieve in my business.
The other thing that I love to think about is the year that was. What happened, what did I learn and how can I use those experiences moving into the new year?
My top 5 business lessons learnt in 2018:
You don’t have to be everywhere, all the time.
I’m so guilty of thinking you have to be on all social platforms, all the time. Well, you know what? Most of my growth has not come from being on Facebook and Instagram. I do spend some time there but it’s not my main focus. That’s huge from someone that started this whole online business thing in social media management!
Focus your time on the areas that drive your business forward ie increase your revenue
Following on from the first point, ditch what’s not proving to give you growth in your business. For me, that has been Pinterest, SEO and email marketing. They are the main focus and I’ve seen steady growth in my website traffic and revenue.
You don’t need crazy amounts of traffic to succeed at affiliate marketing.
When I started The Inspired Boss, I knew that affiliate income would be my focus for the first year or so. I was led to believe though that I would need crazy high traffic to be successful at it.
I can now say, that you don’t! Of course, more traffic will help but I have made $300 with only 1200 page views in the month. Whilst the site now has much more than that, it shows that you can use it in your business from the beginning.
My top two tips are:
- Pick products that have high commissions and a higher price point.
- Create awesome blog posts that drive traffic to your affiliate links. Don’t be skimpy on sharing your knowledge in your area of expertise. Create real value for your audience.

Serve your audience well.
I know it’s tempting to think about how you can earn money with every post and product but if you see it from ‘how can I best serve my audience’, the money will follow.
Ok, that seems a bit airy fairy but it’s so true! Focus on giving your audience what they want and need and you’ll see results.
The biggest example I have of this is the 2019 Blog Planner that I created as an opt-in. A lot of work went into it and it’s on par with other paid planners. Sure I could have created it a paid offering but instead, I gave it away and saw huge growth in my email list. If you haven’t received it yet, then click here.
You can never spend too much time working on your mindset.
In the past, I really did wonder what people were going on about when they spoke about mindset. It took me a while but I finally get!
I now know that it’s always a work in progress and time spent listening to podcasts or reading is most definitely not wasted!
My two most influential people in the area of mindset have been Denise Duffield-Thomas and James Wedmore. Both are so generous with their knowledge, I have paid for DDT’s course (which was money very well spent and will open again in June 2019) but I’ve only received free content from James (he’s amazing, make sure you subscribe to the podcast).
Please, do yourself a favour and prioritise it!
Now as 2018 comes to close, I’m so excited to get stuck into 2019!
What have you learnt this year?
