As a creative entrepreneur, there’s a lot riding on creating the perfect blog post, witty social captions or website copy. So when writer’s block hits, we understand the initial panic, frustration and helplessness that comes with it. Here are our top 5 suggestions on how to overcome writer’s block and get your creative juices flowing again!
1. Switch up your environment.
If you’ve found yourself creating more pinterest boards than paragraphs, making copious cups of tea, talking to your cat or just generally p-r-o-c-r-a-s-t-i-n-a-t-i-n-g then it’s time to relocate.
Whether it be to a different room as part of the house, or actually leaving your home in general… sometimes moving to an environment with the slight murmur of people talking, or coffee being made at your local cafe or library or at a co-working space can be an exceptional source of inspiration.
2. Go back to basics.
Most of the time when we hit a block – it’s because we’ve made the task a bit (a lot) more complicated than it needs to be!
So take a moment, strip it right down and go back to the basics of your task and ask yourself this:
- What is the message we are trying to get across?
- Who is your audience?
- What is your brand about and what is truly important to you?
- What is the SIMPLEST way you can convey this message?
3. Have a lil conversation
We’re not saying you’ve completely run out of ideas and need to start panicking – but we do recommend having a chat to someone you know about your topic and bouncing ideas off them!
For example – depending on your topic – why not ask your friends what questions they would have for a business like yours?
Sometimes conversations we have can spark a fire of our own ideas. And sometimes having a completely fresh perspective can be that extra OMPF you need.
4. Make your environment work for you!
If you can’t or don’t want to leave the space you’re in that’s a-okay – we get it #creaturecomforts! Consider adding some motivational tunes to your hustle session.
Spotify for example has an extensive list of playlists curated specifically for those looking to get sh*t done. Yes there are actually playlists called The Perfect Work Playlist, Walk Like a Badass and Unwind 00’s.
Albeit these might not solve your writer’s block completely but they will definitely help you on your way to creating your next Hemingway masterpiece.
5. Go cold turkey.
That’s right.
If none of the above has worked it’s time to officially go cold turkey on EVERYTHING apart from your word doc.
Pop your phone on do not disturb, quit the email application on your laptop and set yourself a dedicated (and realistic) time frame solely for writing. We hear there is even an App now a days where you can actually put all your social media apps on lock. Bye bye social media procrastination.
So there you have it: 5 of our top tips on how to overcome writer’s block.
At the end of the day – we don’t choose to be writers; the knack to string together words and turn them into powerful sentences, chooses us.
Remember – you got this!
